Cameron MacGregor wins Bronze!

Day 3 of the Oceania Wrestling Championship saw Cameron MacGregor continue the Kiwi winning streak by picking up a bronze medal.
After 3 matches in hot and sandy conditions, MacGregor blitzed his opponents to come third.  The Kiwi powerhouse thrived in the conditions at the luxury complex.  MacGregor said that he responded positively to the opportunity of playing three matches, as opposed to the knockout competition of the previous two days play.
Cameron also holds New Zealand gold medals in both swimming and jujitsu.  We can look forward to seeing more accomplishments on the international scene of this multi-talented elite New Zealand athlete.

Tayla Ford wins silver

Tayla Ford pitted herself against the Korean female judge of the competition to win a well deserved silver medal.  Ford was not fazed by the experience of the Korean judge, producing a credible performance.
This determination and resolve clearly displayed the talented young wrestlers potential for the 2012 Olympic Games.

Pilau under performs at the Oceania Wrestling Championships

Elgin Elwais, wrestler from Pilau, didn’t compete in the 2011 Oceania Wrestling Championships due to a shoulder injury he received during training in the States.  He still manages to climb coconut trees, though.
His shoulder was operated on in the States and he has a frustrating 5 months rehab to look forward to.  He couldn’t compete in this year’s Oceania championships himself, but he is here in Samoa as the coach of the Pilau wrestling team.
The Pilau wrestling team won 3 gold medals in the heavy weight division and little kids division, and one bronze.  Elgin says that they didn’t do so well this year, as he expected the team to win at least 2 gold medals in the Greco-Roman section, but they didn’t perform as well due to misunderstandings between coaches and players.   Players were not following the instructions of the coaches and became sad when they lost.    The Pilau team was the best in Oceania a couple of year’s ago, but not this year.  With only 5 wrestlers in the team, maybe Pilau also needs more wrestlers.
Elgin wrestles at the Olympic Training Centre, Northern Michigan University, USA.  He is the Pilau National Champion and has been an Oceania champion since he weighed 55kgs, last year.
The scholarship that Elgin received from the Northern Michigan University, USA, helps him prepare for the upcoming Olympics, where he will compete in the Greco-Roman 55kg division.  He is also studying for a Sports Science degree.  When he completes his study, he will probably go home to Pilau and work as a coach.

New Zealand bags 20 medals at the Oceania Wrestling Competition

The New Zealand Wrestling team collected 4 gold, 5 silver and 3 bronze medals in Day 2 of the Oceania Wrestling Championship.  The Freestyle events were preferred by many of the New Zealand team, allowing them to use their legs against an opponent.
Tayla Ford was awarded top female of the competition winning gold in both the Junior and Senior divisions.  While Faisal Attayee also won 2 golds and one silver, outclassing a number of experienced wrestlers.  Damen Beynon also picked up gold in the Cadets division.

Tala Ford best female wrestler at Oceania Champs

New Zealander, Tayla Ford was awarded best female wrestler at Oceania Championships yesterday.  The seventeen year old dominated the female competition winning gold in both the junior and senior freestyle wrestling competition.
Tayla, who fights for the Dilworth Club in Christchurch, says it’s cool to wrestle, but there is not female competition, so she practices wrestling against her brother.
Ford maintains that females are better wrestlers than the boys as they have to try harder because they are not as strong as the boys.
When competing, Tayla says, ‘It’s awesome.  You can grab and hold on and keep moving into a dominant position.’  This strategy has won Ford the NZ Freestlyle championship in both the senior and junior categories, and she is also the junior Grappling champion.
Tayla’s goal is to secure funding from Wrestling New Zealand, which will enable her to compete in the Junior and Senior Worlds, and the 2012 Olympics.

Partially sighted Clinton Davies wins double silver!

Clinton Davies won silver in both the Greco-Roman and the Freestyle events at the Oceania Wrestling Competition in Apia this week.
Davies is 2nd in New Zealand for Greco, preferring this Greco event, as it allows him to use his technique of holding on to his opponent and then not letting go.
Being only partially sighted, Clinton hasn’t stopped him from participating fully in the sport, having wrestled for 11 years.   He currently wrestles for Club Physical in Te Atatu.  Clinton has coached for 3 years, including coaching fellow NZ team member, Joshua Downes.    Downes also won bronze in both the Greco-Roman and the Freestyle events.
Clinton enjoys watching kids learn.  He says ‘It’s great to watch young kids gain self-control and use their aggression without hurting anyone.’
Davies’ goal is to represent New Zealand at the 2012 Olympics.
